Multiple Electrocutions Reported After Flooding

Recent flooding throughout the world has lead to many electrical accidents and deaths.  Most happen with downed power lines in water or when people are standing in water and touch a faulty electrical wire at home.  If you experience flooding, please keep electrical safety in mind and don’t go near downed power lines or try to activate or touch any electrical appliance while standing in water.

Below is a recent example among many of electrocution related to flooding.

Batticaloa, Tamil, Sri Lanka – 14 people have died so far in the floods in Batticaloa district according to Batticaloa District Secretariat. At least 10 persons have been reported missing in the district and 4 fishermen are missing in Ampaa’rai district. On Tuesday, a 17-year-old boy was electrocuted and a 19-year-old boy was seriously injured along Koayil Road in Onthaachchi-madam in Ka’luvaagnchik-kudi division in Batticaloa district when they touched a live electric wire lying on the ground after strong winds.

Man Electrocuted by Fence in Sri Lanka

SRI LANKA – A father of two who tried to get manioc from a garden of a house in the Gadolkella area in Padawiya was electrocuted by an electric fence.

The 47-year-old succumbed to his injuries before being admitted to the Padawiya Hospital according to the residents in the area.

Police said that the owner of the house had put up an electric fence to protect his plantations and his garden from wild animals, especially from wild boars. The magisterial inquiry was conducted by the Kebithigollewa Magistrate and the body was sent to the Padawiya Hospital to carry out the post mortem examination.

The suspect was taken into custody and was produced before the Kebithigollewa Magistrate and was remanded.

Boy Killed on Farm In Sri Lanka by Electrical Wire

WELIMADA, SRI LANKA – A farmer was taken into custody after a 12-year-old boy was killed when he tread onto to an exposed current wire that had been placed to discourage animals from attacking the crops, police said today.”It is illegal to place such electricity in an open area, and the suspect in this case has been very careless which eventually grabbed a life”, one senior policeman said.

The victim has been identified as Sanjeewa Kumara from Welimada.

The suspect was due to be produced before the Welimada Magistrate later today.

Welimada police are conducting further investigations.
